Introduction

The FFmpeg software project was started by Fabrice Bellard as Gérard Lantau in 2000 and was led by Michael Niedermayer from 2004 until 2015, who is still the main maintainer.

Reto Kromer started using FFmpeg with version 0.9. This resource is one result of the training courses on FFmpeg for audiovisual archivists he is giving since 2011. It gathers recipes covering real world tasks, used on a daily basis at AV Preservation by reto.ch. He was also a maintainer of ffmprovisr, “a repository of useful FFmpeg command lines for archivists”, from November 2015 to June 2018, and he is still a contributor to this resource.
